Outline:
The Bible teaches us that there are several ways that joy can be lost:
1. Sin
2. Bitterness
3. Pessimism
4. Loss of something we expected to receive
5. Feel that our person or our rights have been violated
6. Idolatry (seeking satisfaction in that which displeases God)
Joy must be very important to God! Every Christian can learn to serve the Lord with gladness if he remembers these seven truths:
1. The Lord is Good - Psalms 100:5
2. Our Sins Have Been Forgiven - Matthew 9:2
3. Our Eternal Home is in Heaven - Luke 10:20
4. Our Reward in Heaven is Great - Matthew 5:12
5. Our Labor is not in Vain - 1 Corinthians 15:58
6. The Lord is at Hand - Philippians 4:4-5
7. Suffering in this Life Will bring Eternal Joy - 1 Peter 4:13
Is it really necessary to serve God with gladness? God gives us a warning in Deuteronomy 28:45-47:
"Moreover all these curses shall come upon thee, and shall pursue thee, and overtake thee, till thou be destroyed; because thou hearkenedst not unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep his commandments and his statutes which he commanded thee:
And they shall be upon thee for a sign and for a wonder, and upon thy seed for ever. Because thou servedst not the LORD thy God with joyfulness, and with gladness of heart, for the abundance of all things;"
Conclusion: When we remember all that God has done for us, we should be able to serve Him with joy!
